In our nation's capital, there are approximately 93,000 residents who live at or below the poverty level. More than 29,850 are children. The high concentration of low-income people in sections of the District of Columbia presents special challenges to those who seek a better life for themselves and their families.
At the Coalition for Economic Empowerment (CEE), our vision is simple: Empowered low-income citizens of the District of Columbia defining and attaining personal and economic success.
In 2005, we are pleased to announce we will be continuing our work at Brookland Manor, a HUD housing community. The Teen Empowerment Initiative is designed to prepare teens to be good students, leaders, family members, and community citizens. We believe that by intervening at this critical stage of development, we can vastly increase the chances that the teens stay on a productive path toward their future.
Our Teen Empowerment Initiative has served more than 50 teens in 2004. Through generous contributions of time and money, we were able to add computer training and mentoring to this year's program.
With our partners, we are developing a Parent Empowerment program for the parents and guardians of the teens we serve. This program will enable the parents and guardians to effectively support the teens while they build on their own successes. Through our work, this intergenerational community is strengthening.
We especially like to thank our partners and supporters who helped make this possible. With bold action and determination, CEE will continue to work towards our vision of an empowered city. We invite you to share our vision and join us in fulfilling it.
